Progress 10

Whitley, Stephen. "Marriage Marketplace: Marx's Theory of use and Exchange Value and the Sphere of Consumption in Jane Austen's "Emma" and "Mansfield Park"." Order No. 1430299 Southern Methodist University, 2006. Ann Arbor: ProQuest.Web. 2 May 2014.
This book talks about though Jane Austen’s love stories are formulaic, they all reflect the marriage ritual in eighteenth century. Parents consider more about the marriage economy rather than children’s true thoughts. They always manipulate children to marry other people. Stephen Whitley firstly introduces the marriage ritual and the marriage economy. Then, he analyzes them in Emma and Mansfield. Finally, he draws a conclusion.
Stephen Whitley does not talk too much about Pride and Prejudice, but his idea is very useful, which is relevant to my research paper. This book belongs to Research Paper.
Actually, the analysis of Emma and Mansfield is not useful to me, but the conclusion is very useful. In the conclusion, Stephen Whitley mentions the reasons why parents want to manipulation their children in marriages. The reasons address my one of my sub questions. This book will help me a lot in my research paper.
Cagle, Jeremey. "Elegant Complexity: The Presence of Cold War Game Theory in Postmodern American Fiction." Order No. 3402752 University of South Carolina, 2010. Ann Arbor: ProQuest. Web. 3 May 2014.
This book talks about what the game theory is. Game theory firstly exits in mathematic. Then it is applied in economy. With time going by, the game theory is also applied in human relationships. In America, the game theory is used in American literature.
This book explains what the game theory is. It also mentions that the game theory is used in human relationship and American literature. This book belongs to Theory.
That address my topic by explain the game theory. It also helps me make a link between the game theory and the marriages in Pride and Prejudice. I will use this book in my introduction part.
FORD, SUSAN ALLEN. "To Be Above Vulgar Economy": Thrifty Measures In Jane Austen's Letters." Persuasions: The Jane Austen Journal30 (2008): 216-221. Literary Reference Center. Web. 3 May 2014.
This article analyzes Jane Austen’s letter to her sister. In the letter, Jane portraits her daily life and also criticizes her life. People think highly of economy and always use economy power to evaluate people. Women in that time have law status and cannot get married people who they really love.
This article analyze Jane Austen’s letter using author’s honest perspective. This article is not directly relevant to my research paper, but it provides me with the background of Pride and Prejudice. This article belongs to Analysis Paper.

For me, this article is very useful when I combine it with other articles. Jane Austen’s letter address my topic by showing the real life of eighteenth century and helping me analyze the reason.
Scheuermann, Mona. "Women And Money In Eighteenth-Century Fiction." Studies In The Novel 19.3 (1987): 311. Humanities International Complete. Web. 4 May 2014.
This article talks about women and money in eighteenth century. As women, matrimony is a financial investment in that period of time. Women characters in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice reflect this thought. In this article, Mona Scheuermann firstly, talks about Daniel Defoe’s novels 'Moll Flanders' and 'Roxana'. Then she talks about Jane Austen’s novel Pride and Prejudice and Emma. The logic is very clear and easy to follow.
This article is not directly relevant to my research paper. The first part of the article is not very useful to me. The second part is good because Mona mentions Jane Austen. This article belongs to Journals and Collections of Essays.
This article mentions that in Pride and Prejudice, parents want their children to marry wealth men so that they do not need to worry about money. Some children still regard their marriages as investments of their left lives. This article helps me to analyze the reasons why game theory will exit in marriages in that period of time. What is more, it also provides me with a new perspective besides the social status of women.
Hamilton, Sylvia N. "Constructing Mr. Darcy: Tradition, Gender, and Silent Spaces in Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice"." Order No. 1454371 University of Central Oklahoma, 2008. Ann Arbor: ProQuest. Web. 4 May 2014.
This book is talking about Mr. Darcy who is the protagonist in Pride and Prejudice. Mr. Darcy is wealth and he is the product of the social construction of gender. He is arrogant and evaluates people according to their economy power. This book talks about the gender categorizes social interactions in everyday life. Mr. Darcy’s behavior reflects this idea. Sylvia N. Hamilton analyzes Mr. Darcy in a very honest way. The main idea is useful and new.
This book is talking about Mr. Darcy and analyzing his behavior. Through his behavior, readers can know the status quo in that period of time and the gender conception in people’s minds. This book does not directly points out the game theory in marriages in Pride and Prejudice.
This book is very useful though it is not directly relevant to my research paper. This book mentions an important conception that is gender categorizes social interactions. It is may be one of the reason why parents want to manipulate their children’s marriages. This book gives me a new direction to make a research.
Khan, Jemima. "The Marriage Business." New Statesman 141.5096 (2012): 32-35. Literary Reference Center. Web. 4 May 2014.
This book talks about that British Muslim men does not want to marry women in British. They prefer to seek wives in East. In this article, Jemima Khan gives readers an example to illustrate the point.
This article does not talk about Pride and Prejudice. It talks about the religion effect in marriage. It also does not limit the time period in eighteenth century. This is a research paper.
I will use the content in this article as a possible evidence to talk about the reason why the game theory exits in marriages. This article seems to be irrelevant to my research paper. Actually, it provides me a new direction that I can think of religion to make a research.
